Taste Bud : 3 stars (about RM594 for 9 dishes)

Disclaimer: This is my 1st restaurant review after being discharged from hospital recently. So my taste bud and appetite might not really that in great mood.

The unlucky restaurant is called “Restaurant King Crab”, located at:

No. 103 - 107, Jalan SS25/2
Taman Mewah Jaya
Petaling Jaya

Tel No: 03 - 7808 2388

(Very large sign board, opposite the Kelana Jaya LRT station)

Why choose this bloody expensive hell restaurant for seafoods? Because it just along the idiot LDP that everyone passing by everyday. Seeing the big sign board is so irritating that until I wanna write an review on it.

Summary of the foods

If you got too much money to spend, this is the right place for your high standard and lifestyle. Or else, this may not be the best place to dine in term of money value. We ordered 9 dishes including Yee Sang for 11 people, and it damaged us about RM594. The priceless thing is the acquaintance of friends and jokers who also enjoyed the foods and the evening.

Food List:

Standard Yee Sang - RM48 (very normal loh)

Pot of Beancurd - RM18 (very normal loh)

Thai Style Chickhen

Green Pea

Undersea Chicken

“Undersea Chicken” - RM90 - Not as good as I expected for a restaurant like this!

Salted Egg Crab

1 pot of Salted Egg Crabs - RM108 - Yummy, the crabs are fresh but too pricy!

Butter Crab

1 pot of butter crabs - RM108 - The crabs are fresh but this is not the best butter crabs I ever had (A bit disappointed!)

A truly “Prestige Platinum” fine dining at Lafite - Part 4 (Starters, Plates, Dessert & Surprise)

“Astonishing really! Bravo to his chef de cuisine, Kevin Cherkas and the most glamorous & stylishly restaurant in town - Lafite! Your superb culinary skills and novel fusion concepts in contemporary fine dining have stonkingly impressed me this year again.” said Xiao Loong Zi

In my previous post, “A truly “Prestige Platinum” fine dining at Lafite - Part 3 (Pre-Starters) “, I shared with readers the special drinks, wines and breads from Lafite. Today, I am going to unveil the “The Beginning” (The Starters), “Plates” (The Main Courses), Dessert and the “Surprise” that me and my friends had tried.

“The Beginning”

Prawn

Prawn “Guacamole” - RM29

A unique starter created in that week by Chef Kevin Cherkas. It was made up of 3 fresh hot prawns placed on top of specially made red sauce in the small circle outlined by the white sauce. A fine piece of dry sotong-like bisque cracker was placed on top of the prawns so that you have to eat it before you can have the prawns :). The most amazing thing was the spoon of ice-avocado that can melt, cool, and refresh your throat which created me a wonderful rejoice dinner mood in the beginning. Thus, I was told by the waiter to finish the ice-avocado before enoying the rest. The freshly-juiced from the hot prawns when I bitten, burst into my taste buds warmly, and I could feel the chemical-like reaction melting inside my mouth with the extraordinary sensational & awesome tastes.

“Truffled” Salmon Carbonara - RM42

On a square flat metal plate, the foundation of this starter was made up of a very rare and fine thin layer of smoked salmon. Because the smoked salmon was so fine and thin like a piece of paper, it melt so easily with your saliva, immediately sending the bursting effects onto your tongue tasting the rare smoked salmon. On top of the smoked salmon was the spaghetti with green beans and decorative white sauces in surrounding. To our surprise, the spaghetti was unlike normal wheat spaghetti but it was made from potato. It tasted cold with the creamy white sauce. What is more artistic was the crispy yolk on top of the spaghetti that was fried with thin layer of flour and it was so yummy.

“Plates”

Cod Romesco

Cod Romesco - RM98

A slow cooked fresh cod fish full of moisturized fish-juice: fish oil, and naturally textured white meat in an amazing red garlic cream sauce is a wonderful precious dish for seafood lover to enjoy. You would also be able to notice that green leeks were used to create delicate and sweeter flavor without overpowering other flavors. I mean, I could still taste the fried scallops, baby carrots and crushed almond in original tastes. And my tongue was pampered so much with different types of amazing juices produced in this plate. I love to suck the moisturized white meat of cod fish to taste it’s juicy fish oil and sauce. It was even better to chill it with my glass of house white wine. On top of the cod fish were two decorative long bean made circled as rings and were fried so that it tasted very crispy.

Duck Duck Goose

Duck Duck Goose - RM95

The sliced marinated roast duck was cooked inside while half-cooked outside with great aroma smell of the duck meat. The way on how it was carefully prepared must be sophisticated in view to bring up it’s unusual taste. It is in fact a very unique plate that can beat off a lot of competitors of Duck Duck Goose.

“Dessert”

Chocolate moose cake

Chocolate Moose Cake with an unidentified exotic fruit

This piece of cake was not available on the menu but it was freshly made on the day itself due to special request. A 24-hour advance-booking is required to enjoy this piece of cake. Everything in Lafite is so fine and so precious that can’t find it in anywhere else. This Chocolate Moose Cake with the finest chocolate ingredients can beat a lot of pastry brands including Secret Recipe in the Chocolate Cake Category. Two small slices were served, one for me and one for my friend, the rest wrapped into a beautiful box to bring it home.

Chocolate Moose Cake 2

The Chocolate Moose Cake brought to home

The “Surprise”

The surprise

A Winter Raspberry Cotton Flower Chocolate Tree

It was a complimentary “surprise” served at the end of our meal. My friend was so happy to see this tree. It was a pot of plastic tree with raspberry cotton as flowers that can be eaten, the leafs fall on the soil were made of chocolate and the soil were full of cocoa beans. Because the cotton flowers were made of sugar and can be oxidated easily, it seemed like it was snowing.

Lifestyle by Xiao Loong Zi on “Prestige Platinum” membership by Shangri La Hotel

Overall taste bud: Impressively 5 stars from UntodCityLife.com (A strong upgrade recommendation from Xiao Loong Zi)

In my previous post, “A truly “Prestige Platinum” fine dining at Lafite - Part 2 (Membership) “, I shared with readers the privileges offer by “Prestige Platinum” membership. Today I am going to share with readers the pre-starters at Lafite :).

With great courtesy and hospitality, the waiter asked if we would like to have “sparkling spring water”? Mmmmmm wouldn’t it sounds better if he could ask “carbonated” or without “carbonated” mineral water instead? Afraid of the “carbonated” gases would spoil our taste bud, we ordered two glasses of Evian Natural Spring Water. Next, we were handed a thin book of encyclopedia-like beverage list. It was a book with fine and rare collections of great wines, champagnes and alcoholic drinks from around the world. Instead of reading it and pretending like a wine connoisseur, I asked for the available house wines. Can’t really catch what the waiter was mentioning in the French manners, I therefore asked for a white house wine. The white house wine to our surprise was indeed excellent and rare, I would recommend you to take their house wines instead of choosing it yourself from the expensive wine list. If I am not mistaken, the house wine we had was a mild matured chardonnay in golden-yellow that was not so strong or so light but just harmonious in enjoying it.

White wine

White House Wine

Then, a two pages list of Lafite’s menu divided into “The Begining” (The Starters) and “Plates (The Main Dishes) were handed to us. I took a look and I could recall one of the items were the same as last year’s Textured Lobster “Thermidor” that I tried before.

The begining

The begining

Plates

Plates

After kinda long a while, my friend and I decided the following:

The begining:

1 Prawn “Guacamole” for me

1 “Truffled” Salmon Carbonara for my friend

Plates:

1 Cod Romesco for me

1 Duck Duck Goose for my friend

Once foods were ordered, we were served with some kind of French breads together with specially in-house made cheese-like butter as shown. The breads were unlike any others, rough and hard outside but warm and soft inside. You could still feel that it was freshly made or just baked because the heat captured inside center of the bread kept it warm. We like it so much until we finished and got another round for refills :D.

A “specialicious” in Serdang Raya, Seri Kembangan

An UntoldCityLife.com’s Taste Bud Review by Xiao Loong Zi

Overall taste bud: 4 stars (About RM120++ for 6 dishes - 8 people) - Xiao Loong Zi recommended!

Every morning, a lot of cars from Seri Kembangan passing by Serdang Raya road to avoid the Sg Besi toll. This road always caused me unpleasant traffic condition for about 15 min when using it to go to work daily. The ONE and ONLY reason to visit Serdang Raya has to be related to “specialicious” foods!

This time, I would like to recommend readers to visit a Chinese shop called “Yu Xing Fan Dian” or “Yoke Heng Fan Dim” at

No. 33, Jalan SR 8/4,
Taman Putra Indah,
Serdang Raya,
43300 Seri Kembangan,
Selangor

Tel: 03-89438753 H/P: 012-6533915
(Tips: Shop located in the middle, along with “Da?Dao?Dong?Jiu Jia”)
Business hour: 10.30am to 11.00pm

Let’s see what kind of “specialicious” there:

Lou Shi Fen

The most famous and branded “Lou Shi Fen” with the best-kept secret recipe only can be found here!

La la

“Specialicious” La La in very unique sauce that everyone rated it for 4.5 stars!

Seng Kuan Tofu

Extremely impressive, tasty and very fresh “Seng Kua Tofu” that can leave the aromatic taste on your tongue! (5 stars)

San Har Mee

Stupendous “San Har Mee” with big tiger prawns! - (Our rating is just 3.5 for this dish!)

Marmite Pork

The branded “Marmite Pork” in aluminium cooking foil that is also recommended for pork lovers!

KangKong Melayu

Lastly, this is one of the places that cooks the best “KangKong Melayu” (Our rating is 4 stars for this dish!)

My 1 dollar comment!

This is a shop that I highly recommended for the sophisticated food lovers community. A luncheon with colleagues or friends especially bringing foreigners to enjoy such “specialicious” foods in a not so decorative shop would be most suitable. The price is considered reasonable for the serving size, quality and taste of the foods.

Uniquely Singapore! What can you do in Geyland?

An UntoldCityLife.com’s Taste Bud Review by Xiao Loong Zi

Overall taste bud: 3 stars (It costs me about $7/$8 for this meal)

What can you do in Geyland? Mmmmm, the very first thing in your mind must be “sex”, “sex” and “sex”!. Many Singaporeans and tourists visit Geyland not for the “kinky stuff” but for the foods!. Few years back in KL, a Teow Chew friend of mine brought me to a Teow Chew Porridge dinner nearby Times Square KL (opposite the Pudu Jail), since then I started enjoying eating Teow Chew Porridge. After the quest of finding “breast balls” in Geyland, I went to Lorong 17 for Teow Chew porridge. (The shop is a corner shop at the end of Lorong 17). I must tell you that there were more 30 - 50 dishes at that time in the shop! (see the amazing dishes below)

If you happen to drop by Lorong 17, from this Soon Cheng Porridge Shop, cross the road to opposite row of shops, walk along towards left and you will pass by a Sex Toy Shop called “Secret Affair”. Read my post about this “Secret Affair”. For more readings on “Taste Bud “, click here.

A truly Singapore Hawker’s Delight - Tasty Sliced Fish Soup

Taste Buds 5 Comments »

Uniquely Singapore! You must try it in Singapore as you can’t find it in Malaysia

An UntoldCityLife.com’s Taste Bud Review by Xiao Loong Zi

Overall taste bud: 3.5 stars (The fish soup usually costs around $4/$5/$6 depending on your choice)

This is not the first time that I tried the Sliced Fish Soup here in Singapore. In fact, Sliced Fish Soup is always my first choice in Singapore’s food courts. Why? Personally, I like it a lot. And, you hardly see any hawker selling it in Malaysia. So to me, this is truly unique in Singapore. (Tell me if you know where to find it in Malaysia).

About Sliced Fish Soup in Singapore?

The word Sliced Fish Soup is very much self-explanatory! It is a bowl of special recipe soup with sliced fish as the main ingredient with it. The sliced fish can be fried or non-fried as you can choose from. You also must tell what flavor of soup you would like to have. I can’t remember all the choices there, in my case, I ordered a “Yin Yong” in white milk soup. “Yin Yong” means you will have both fried and non-fried sliced fish boiled together with the soup. Vegetables, tomatoes prawns, tofus, seaweeds and milks are usually added into the soup to create the extra flavor and taste.

Tell me what do you think of this special Singapore Hawker’s Delight?

Sliced Fish Soup

My 1 dollar comment:

This is a common food usually found in most Singapore’s food courts. I don’t think you can find the exact food here in Malaysia. If you are visiting Singapore for hawker foods, give it a try then.

We keep going back to this shop for more than 5 times in the past! Highly recommended if you like Curry Fish Head! Other than Curry Fish Head, the shop also served numerous delicious Chinese cookings that are considered above standards.

Location:

A shop called KCW located in Serdang Raya. See the 1st map if you are coming from TPM or Bukit Jalil direction. Along the Serdang Raya road, after a long while, before you see a few car workshops, turn right into the workshop direction and follow the instruction in the 2nd map.

My 1 dollar comment!

Trust me, this is a place that you should really spend it with your colleagues, friends or families. Breakfast + Lunch at Tai Thong Restaurant at SS2

An UntoldCityLife.com’s Taste Bud Review by Xiao Loong Zi

Overall taste bud: 3.5 stars (6 dishes for two persons at RM62.70)

What a lazy Saturday morning! Where would you go for a simple breakfast? I think I am getting sophisticated on foods nowadays. So going to Tai Thong for a brunch is something unusual in my life. This “unlucky” friend in PJ was called to company me to review Tai Thong’s dim sum and foods.

Tai Thong SS2

It was extremely crowded inside the restaurant at 11am. Most tables already filled with big families and we were lucky enough to get a table in a nice section.

Ok… let see the mouth-watering dim sum and foods

dim sum

Our dim sum set

Siu Mei

The yummy “Siew Mei”

The

The “Har Kao”?

Don know what is this?

Can someone tell me what is this called? :p (I think this is the “har kao”, right?)

Fish ball

Fish ball cake? (Don’t really know how you call it :p)

Lou Mei Kai

This “Lou Mei Kai” got pork meat! So I dont like it!

Yummy crispy cake

Yummy crispy prawn cakes

Breakfast done! And now lunch is served hot!

Aromatic Seafood XO sauce fried rice

Aromatic Seafood Fried Rice in XO sauce! Yummy! RM15 RM20 - big serving!

My 1 dollar comment!

The taste of the foods usually varies from one Tai Thong restaurant to another. I was not so impressed with some of the dim sums here. In fact, the dim sums not really as good as I though or tried in somewhere else. However, the Seafood Fried Rice in XO sauce is something you should really give it a try. Let me know if you know where I can get above standard dim sums in town.

Little Vietnam - A Taste Bud Review

Little Vietnam in Mid Valley, Kuala Lumpur

An UntoldCityLife.com’s Taste Bud Review by Xiao Loong Zi

Overall taste bud: 2.5 stars (from 5 people rating)

Mr Right was working in Cyberjaya and at about 6pm he already called us who working in Bukit Jalil to have dinner in Sri Petaling. At 7pm sharp, the group of us in Bukit Jalil already started moving toward Sri Petaling and as usual we gave Mr Right a call. “I am still in the office and will be leaving soon!” said Mr Right. It seemed that Mr Right is going to be Mr Late. Inside a big wagon heading to Sri Petaling, “What to eat?” asked Xiao Loong Zi, “Whatever la” answered by Ms Anything….

Xiao Loong Zi: Mamak stall?

Ms Anything : Don wan la so crowded

Xiao Loong Zi: Inside Carefour?

Ms Anything : Don wan la nothing to eat wan

Xiao Loong Zi: Jalan Kuchai Lama

Ms Anything : What to eat there

Mr Wagon : It’s a big food court that has many foods to eat

Ms Anything : Don wan la …. no air con also

Xiao Loong Zi: Mid Valley then

Ms Anything : Can also la …. u decide loh

We called Mr Right again to meet in Mid Valley and he was still in the office …. duh!

Because we were having dinner with Ms Anything, it was kinda hard to decide what to have in Mid Valley. Lastly, the Little Vietnam at the GSC level was decided by Xiao Loong Zi :p.

Litle Vietnam

Let’s see the foods that we tried:

grilled chickhen with noddle

Grilled Chicken with Noddle Soup (Very normal food according to Mr Wagon)

curry cheong fun

Vietnamese Cheong Fun in Curry Source (The curry taste very weird according to Ms Anything and she didn’t finish it)

Vermicilli

Vermicilli with Springrolls and Chicken Sausage (Xiao Loong Zi loved it but this was not the best ones)

rice bowl

Rice bowl with vegetables (Mr Late’s girlfriend didn’t comment anything as she was too shy I guess)

*Mr Late and his girlfriend was both very late! 2 hours late after we finished everything! So this meal was free as a penalty for Mr Late who late for 2 hours to treat us all.

Our 1 dollar comment!

This is not a good place to try nice Vietnamese food! Especially Ms Anything and Mr Wagon, both of them condemning my choice selecting this restaurant for dinner! Therefore, this post was written under the pressure! Whether you like it or not, my advice is to give it a try and leave your comment.

Overall taste bud: 4 stars (about $20+ : 1 pasta, 1 fruit soomthy + 1 free salad)

I am supposed to meet my Mauritian friend in Clarke Quay for a dinner last Thursday night. It happened that I can’t leave the company early. After reaching my serviced residence and changing my clothing, the clock was almost half past eight. Then, have to reschedule the meet with this friend.

I went to Boat Quay/Clarke Quay - The Central to hunt for foods. Only the PASTA de Waraku caught my eyes! Located at the 2nd floor of the new shopping mall - The Central, this fusion restaurant featured a variety ways of Pasta cookings that is so impressive!

The design of the restaurant featuring hundreds of pasta on the walls to spoil and confuse your taste bud. It’s kinda hard to decide what you wanna eat here. It’s all so attractive and tempting!

This is a fusion restaurant founded by a Japanese and you could feel the hospitality of Japanese and western cultures here. Waiters and waitresses are so polite, interactive, helpful, fast in serving, cleaning and refilling plain water for you without you asking for it. Most importantly, the food is worth a try. I will recommend this brand to you if you in Singapore.
