Another shocking city scene in Hong Kong
An UntoldCityLife.com’s Shocking City Scene written by Xiao Loong Zi
Hong Kong in Mandarin literally means ‘fragrant harbour’. More than 7 million population sharing the land area of 1099 km², ranked 3rd in highest density of 6407 population per km². To live in Hong Kong, one would have to bear with the space constraint, polluted environment as well as the high cost of living. Despite the economy boom and Hong Kong as an International Financial Center, the gap between the rich and poor is getting wider and obvious. Houses are extremely expensive and people live below the poverty can’t even afford to rent a small room. As seen on Hong Kong’s drama series as well as in the realistic world, many of the homeless are living inside ‘caged houses’.
What is a ‘caged house’ ?
A ‘caged house’ is a rectangular steel cage, slightly bigger than a coffin to accomodate one person for sleeping and living. Many steel cages are then placed inside a small room with one deck on top another to fill up all the space. Some of the steel cage can also be found along the back alley of shops. And the tenants usually have to pay the rental to be able to sleep in the steel cage provided. See those pictures below to know how a ‘caged house’ looks like.
